Young Women Girls Camp

Princesses – Daughters of a King

This is the complete notebook I used to create a Princess-themed Girls Camp.  We had 19 young women ages 13 – 17 and 5 leaders.  Many parts can be applied to a much larger group.  Our camp was held at a large local lake and we stayed in a cabin (air conditioned, thank you very much)  with a large group sleeping room.  There were no stoves or cooking facilities.   We used fire pits and 2 large grills brought from home.   The food stayed cool in ice chests.   The young women still talk about this camp to this day as the best they’ve attended.  I think you’ll enjoy it.  Go for it!

Your Invitation

This is your opportunity to set the stage and really sell the activity.  You want to include enough details to get their interest up while still retaining some mystery about what’s going to unfold.  This is also your first step to start getting everyone into the spirit of the theme. Make your camp announcement into a ‘royal proclamation’ by using sheets of pink parchment paper smeared with iridescent glitter dust. Then roll the invitation and tie it with a pink ribbon.

By Royal Proclamation –

YOU are invited to

Camp V.I.R.T.U.E.

Once upon a time, in the not so far away land of Kearney, there
lived many beautiful princesses.  They were Daughters of a King.
They were known throughout the land for their
VIRTUE, WISDOM, COURAGE, PATIENCE, FAITH, CONFIDENCE, & CHARITY.

Dragons from many lands sought to destroy them, but they found strength in numbers where they could wax strong in confidence at

Camp V.I.R.T.U.E.

Valiant In Righteousness, True Unto Eternity

WHEN: Morning of Wednesday, July 8th to morning of Saturday, July 11th

WHERE: Enchanted Smithville Lake Castle (really cool cabin with AC!)

WHAT: Water Activities, Swim, Canoe, Dragon Eggs Hike, Jewels

& Gems, Photography, Archery, Tie Dye, Outdoor Movies, Royal Ball,

Beach Party, Pig Roast, Candle and Card Making,

Camp Fires, Friends, S’mores and so much more!

Our Camp Purpose

To help the young women appreciate the importance of virtue by reminding them of their royal birthright, impressing upon them just how special they are and helping them understand what is expected of them.  You can do this by reinforcing, throughout the camp, their worth and value as a daughter of a King.

The girls are so much more touched by a camp that is positive.  We spent the week working to help them live up to their birthright as wonderful, beautiful, divine, virtuous daughters of God; princesses and heirs to His Kingdom.

Note on Afternoon Activities – The young women wanted to spend the entire afternoon at the lake. We ended up not doing our afternoon Candle Activity.  One of the keys to a successful camp experience is that the young women get to enjoy themselves.  Our choices were: 1) continue having a ball at the lake swimming, boating and bonding or 2) go back to the hot cabin and make candles and paper.  Hm, that ‘s certainly a tough decision.  Not.

The activity was: Wax Strong with Ties that Bind – Bees Wax Candle Making & Knots.  It’s a good activity.  We’ll do it later.

Girls Camp Rules

DAY 1 Activity – Welcome, Review of Kingdom Laws & Camp V.I.R.T.U.E Schedule

Location: “Royal Hall” (Shelter House)

Time:   9:00 – 9:15 (Get settled in 9:15 – 9:30)

General Camp Rules

  1. Welcome to the Enchanted Kingdom and Camp Virtue !!   We are all looking forward to making this an awesome 3 days for you.
  2. Don’t want to scare anyone – but we’ve just received a report from DMB (Dragon Management Bureau) that we are under a Level 2 Dragon Watch. As you know, this means there has been a dragon sighting in the area. (I’ve printed out a copy of the warning and will post it in case you’d like to review it.)
  3. Because of this, the Enchanted Kingdom has enacted 2 Laws. There are only 2, but they are very important.

The first LAW of the Kingdom: it is mandatory that you remain within the boarders of the Kingdom unless you are with a Fairy Godmother during times when there are activities outside the kingdom.

Boarders of Kingdom

South – Road

East – Trees

North – Trees

West – Fence

The second LAW of the Kingdom: As you know, Dragons are especially fond of snacking on Princesses in a nice tepid Lake Water Sauce.   Due to this, no part of any Princesses is allowed in the Lake (not even so much as a toe) without a Fairy Godmother present.   We will cast a magical spell on the lake prior to Water Activities, but otherwise it is not safe and therefore not allowed.

We would far rather have to call your mother to pick you up because you violated the Kingdom rules, than to have to call her and tell you became a tasty dragon tidbit.   But, do understand that because of the gravity of the situation, there will be no ‘Warnings’ given. If you violate either of the 2 Kingdom rules, we will have no choice but to call your mother to come and pick you up.

Daily Rules

  1. Your Fairy Godmothers will take roll at the beginning of each activity – either be at an activity or if you are sick, then you must tell the Fairy Godmother in charge of your activity and then go directly to the Royal Chambers. If you are sick, you cannot be wandering around the Kingdom – You need to be in the Royal Chambers. So you’re either at the activity or in the Royal Chambers – one or the other, but that’s all.
  2. No cell phones – their signals can interrupt some of the magical spells and very strange things can happen as a result. So if we find any, they get locked in the Fairy Godmother’s magical chest until camp is over.  The ONLY exception to this is for the Photography Class.  Period.
  3. No Pranking. If another Princess ends up in tears, you might be sent home.
  4. Last – BE KIND and HAVE FUN.

Take Roll & Review Groups

We’re going to give each of you a sign with your name on it to hang on the foot of your bed in the Royal Chambers. So go pick out a bed, get settled in, look around.   You can put your stuff under your bed or between beds at the head of the bed under the windows.

Old King Dell’s Casserole Recipe

  1. Take Roll
  2. Help Princesses organize work and coordinate efforts to do as many of the following as possible:
    1. Peel and cube pineapple. Store in plastic baggies in RV refrigerator
    2. Ball Melons for tomorrow breakfast
    3. Assemble Casserole
  1. Store in Casserole dishes in RV refrigerator
  2. Teach Princesses:

To keep raw, sliced potatoes from browning, keep the slices in a bowl with enough of the liquid you plan to use in the recipe to cover. The potatoes don’t turn brown and the liquid, such as milk, cream or broth, gets enriched with the potato starch, which only helps thicken the sauce when the casserole cooks.

Peeled potatoes can sit in water for up to 12 hours if they are going to be fried

Peeled potatoes can sit in water for up to 24 hours if they are going in a casserole or are going to be scalloped.

Most potato casserole dishes can be pre-made up the day before and refrigerated.

11:55 – Tell Princesses to go enjoy lunch

DAY 1 Activity – Wax Strong with Ties that Bind: Bees Wax Candle Making , Waterproofing Matches and Knots

Girls Camp Activities

Location: “Royal Hall”

Time:   3:00 – 4:00 Group 2 Teachers: Sis Harman, Sis Erwin, Bro Edwards   Supplies: Multi-colored beeswax
sheets 8 x 16 Honeycomb Sheets http://www.knorrbeeswax.com cotton wicks at least 8 1/2″ long Sheet of Wax paper or parchment paper to work on. Scissors 4 Cardboard match hanging boxes double-sided carpet tape shellac 2 boxes 250 Diamond Strike Anywhere Matches (25 matches for 20 princesses, 33 matches for 15 princesses) Rope Scout manuals – Sherrye/Amber   Assume you cut the 20 sheets in half (40 8’ x 8’ sheets), then assume you cut 10 of those diagonally so now you have 30 8’ x 8’ sheets and 20 8’ diagonal sheets. This provides a total of 50 candles. (16 girls can make 3 candles each) Place sheet long wise. Cut into two 8″ squares. Cut each square diagonally. (now you have 4 right triangles.) Cut each triangle in half = 8 candles from one sheet.

  1. Take Roll
  2. Demonstrate how to make a Basic Candle:
    1. Lay one of the cut pieces of the beeswax sheet on your clean work surface. Lay the piece of wick on the edge of the piece of beeswax directly in front of you. At least a half an inch of the piece of wick should extend past one end of the piece of beeswax.
    2. Slowly and carefully start to roll the edge of the piece of beeswax closest to you over the wick.
    3. Tuck the edge of the piece of beeswax in around the wick. You want to seal it in so you when you continue rolling your candle it will roll up neatly and evenly.
    4. Roll up your candle slowly and carefully with your fingers pushing the beeswax with both hands exerting even pressure at the same time. While you are rolling keep and eye your edges to make sure you are rolling straight so your candle will be straight. You want to roll a nice straight, tight candle so it will look nice and burn well. Tightly but gently roll the candles. (Air or bubbles will also cause them to burn too fast.)
    5. Continue rolling at the same pace you have been until you are about two inches from the end then slow down. You want to make sure the end of your candle is rolled as tight as you did the beginning and that the edges are still straight while you are rolling up the last of your candle.
    6. When you have the end of the piece of beeswax rolled up around to finish off your candle you need to seal the edge to the roll so it won’t come undone. Once again you can use your body heat to warm up the wax so you can do this. Starting in the middle of the roll of beeswax, press your fingers gently along the edge of the piece of beeswax. You only need to do this lightly and briefly. You don’t want to push down on the edge too hard or you will crush your candle. You are only trying to adhere the edge to the rest of the candle. Continue this until the entire edge is molded to the body of the candle.
    7. Trim the wick of the candle to 1/4″ long.
  1. If you wish, add decorations to your finished candles.  It could be a some sequins, or small item that fits the theme for when the candles will be used.
  2. Have the Princesses make a candle

Hints:

  • If you are having trouble getting the wax to roll at the beginning, slightly mold the first edge to create a bit of a ridge.  Put the wick right along the ridge and then start rolling.
  1. Demonstrate how to make Ruffled Candles:
  1. Use a triangular shaped piece of wax to get a spiral along the outside.
  2. Take 1 triangle (place like a right triangle)
  1. Place one wick on to the bottom edge of the triangle. Press gently. A small amount should be left over the edge.
  2. Roll and gently press down JUST covering the wick. (about 1/4″)
  3. Keep rolling and gently pressing VERY little at a time.
  4. Gently press and roll out any air pockets.
  5. These are rolled like the rectangular beeswax sheets, but once they are completely rolled up, take your finger and gently roll the edges over to give them a ruffled look.
  1. Have the Princesses make a ruffled candle
  1. Show the princesses how to Waterproof Matches:
  1. Cut an opening in the box and line the top edge with double-sided carpet tape. Be sure to put some papers underneath to catch the drips.
  2. Grab a match and dip the head end of the match into clear nail polish far enough to cover at least an eighth of an inch (3 millimeters) of the stick below the head.
  3. Shake it to get rid of excess shellac
  4. Stick it to the tape.

Simple as that!  This way the shellac drips down towards the head and not the base of the match. Using this method, waterproofing goes quickly and there’s not a lot of mess to deal with.   Knots Bowline Square Knot Half hitch Clove hitch   Knife Safety ■ Do not pass an open knife ■ Pass a knife in a sheath to another person handle first ■ Cut away from yourself ■ Never leave it on the ground ■ Close it or put it away when not in use, keep away from children   Care ■ Keep clean, dry, and free from rust ■ Oil , with machine oil, the joints occasionally ■ Do not try to cut metal, brick, nails or other hard objects ■ Do not use the knife to pry, the blade may break ■ Keep away from heat ■ Keep your knife sharp After getting the knife out you know it needs to be sharpened.   Sharpening ■ You need a whetstone and light machine oil ■ Place a few drops on the stone on the rough side ■ Hold the knife flat on the stone and raise the back of the blade slightly ■ Stroke the full edge of the blade across the stone ■ Use a thin slicing motion as if you were cutting off a thin slice of the stone ■ Turn the blade over and use the same process on the other side ■ Continue this process until the blade edge is sharp ■ Use the fine side to hone the edge ■ Test on a small twig or small branch     When done, tell Princesses from 4:00 – 6:00 is Princess Diary Time
